Last week I got the chance to hang out with some of the best fitness coaches in the world.
Just like I always encourage you to get social support to help you reach you goals, I do the same thing.
You also want to be around people that are better than you, so you can see what works and what doesn’t.
One of the best coaches in the business is Tony Horton.
If you don’t recognize the name, he’s the P90X guy you’ve seen on TV jumping up and down.
In the last 10 years he’s had probably more impact on getting people more people into shape than anyone else on earth.
And he started out as a dead broke wanna be actor in Hollywood. He started helping people in the gym just to pay the bills and make ends meet.
After picking up some celebrity clients in the late 70’s and 80’s he eventually landed the instructor role for Beachbody.
He got Tom Petty(the rock n roller) in shape for touring back in the 90’s and used Tom’s program as an outline for p90X!
And as they day the rest is history.
Today at 55 this guy is the REAL DEAL. Every strength move you see him do on TV he’s doing, and he can do it anytime.
So what are the 5 BIG Fitness Factors Tony Horton told me?
He put it out there and I agree.
1. Variety- You’ve got to keep the body guessing about what’s coming to keep making progress.
One day you may do 3 sets of 5 the next you’re doing 1 set of 30.
Change up the order of your exercises and change your exercises.
Once you get a base of fitness you need to use it or lose it.
Use your new found fitness in new and different ways. Run 5k’s, take random exercise classes, do some Yoga, keep the
variety coming to alleviate boredom and to keep the results coming.
2) Consistency- Tony recommends 7 Days a week of Exercise of some kind.
It’s the “brush your teeth” principle of exercise. You do it EVERY Day. You wouldn’t NOT brush your teeth
3) Intensity- Tony said the simple fact is to see results you’re going to have to push yourself.
He related how some people have even religiously followed P90X for the entire 90 Day program, ate perfectly and still didn’t see results because this KEY INGREDIENT was missing.
What’s the key ingredient?
The intensity is key to results…
They were going through the entire 90 Day program without increasing their intensity, they would just go through the motions…not pushing themselves or work with a partner that pushed them.
And higher intensity is the key to rapid results.
4) Why– You’ve got to have a reason why you’re doing this.
And there has to be a commitment and
purpose.
Tony said his “why” for working out was “The Feel Good philosophy. When I work out I feel better..I like feeling strong and flexible. Heck I’m 55 and I feel better than I did in my 20’s.”
5) Plan- You’ve got to get yourself a plan.
Tony said “If you just wake up and don’t have your workout scheduled into your day, it’s not going to get done. So you’ve got to build it into your daily plan”
And even though he’s coached millions of people all over the globe he said “I always have a plan of what I’m going to do, it makes it easier, I just follow the plan”
So that’s the 5 point philosophy from the most popular man in fitness today.
