Talking this morning to a friend who’s been able to stay in shape for over 20 years from High School through College, serving in the military, having children, and balancing home, family, a career, and raising children.
I asked her what mental trick or self-talk she uses to get herself to workout even at the end of a long work day.
She said “I tell myself I just need to show up.”
She went further to explain “That’s why I always do Crossfit, or Spin, or Yoga… I can’t just go to the gym, I’ll never get anything done…I have to be able to show up and know everything else is taken care of”
What is interesting is this is the very same advice I’d give you if it was your very first month ever to workout.
It seems the real key to getting and staying in shape is to just..
“Show up”
To beat your internal resistance and show up.
As simple as it sound it get’s missed by a lot of people.
And that’s the habit that you want to cultivate.
I tell my new clients and boot campers…
Your first month you have to focus on getting up, putting your shoes on, aiming your car in the direction of my gym, and walk in….
That’s IT!
Once you’re here I’ll take care of the rest.
You don’t have to focus or even concern yourself with the exercise.
Exercise isn’t even the habit you’re really building at first.
It seems strange but it’s true….The habit you need to focus on is the up-shoes-car-walk in habit.
Because 1st week or 20th year working out. The showing up is habit you must have.
And a good coached program is the best thing to arrive to.
The fewer decisions you have to make the easier it is to stay consistent and get a quality workout done.
